A whole farm comparison of irrigated cotton rotations in the Lower Namoi Valley, NSW AgEcon

A whole farm budget for a representative farm in the Lower Namoi Valley in northern NSW was used to analyse the financial implications of a comparative rotational experiment of four cotton-based rotations conducted in recent years at the Australian Cotton Research Institute, near Narrabri. The model was used to compare the rotations, which highlighted the importance of crop selection for the financial performance of the business. Apart from providing a broad brush picture of financial performance, the model also had a stochastic component which was used to analyse the effect of variable commodity prices on the whole farm profitability of each rotation. An Assessment of the Economic Impacts of NSW Agriculture Research and Extension - Conservation Farming and Reduced Tillage in Northern NSW AgEcon

This assessment of research and extension in conservation farming in northern NSW was done as part of a systematic process of evaluating the economic, social and environmental impacts of major research, extension and education programs. The conservation farming program was a key area of investment by NSW Agriculture and an evaluation process fulfils accountability and resource allocation requirements. This analysis evaluates the investments by the former NSW Agriculture in conservation farming and reduced tillage programs from the late 1970s to 2002. The benefit-cost ratios (BCR) for no till only and no till plus reduced tillage practices up to 2002 were 4.1:1 and 9:1, respectively. An Economic Comparison of Sheep Grazing Systems on the Northern Tablelands of NSW AgEcon

Three 54ha "farmlets" were established in 2000 near Uralla, NSW to trial high input, moderate input and intensive rotational grazing systems. A representative farm approach was used to interpret the profitability results of the trial from July 2000 to June 2005 at a commercial scale level to make research results more relevant to farmers. At the gross margin level, the high input farmlet had the highest annual gross margins, but this farmlet had the worst whole farm performance. These contrasting results support the claim that annual activity gross margins cannot alone indicate the profitability of an investment. This demonstrates that whole farm analysis is the most suitable method to assess different grazing systems.

Analysis of Farming Systems Issues in the Northern Cropping Region of NSW AgEcon

A number of farming systems projects are currently being conducted in the north eastern cropping region of Australia. These are jointly funded by the grains industry and state government R&D agencies, and conducted by the latter with some involvement of private industry. The issues which were the genesis of these projects are basically technological (ie productivity-enhancement) to maintain or improve farm income over time, and environmental to redress natural resource degradation associated with the current system. Changes in Management Can Improve Returns from Cambodian Upland Crops AgEcon

Farming systems research for wet-season non-rice upland crops in Cambodia is being conducted with the overall aim of poverty reduction and food security for farmers in the Provinces of Battambang and Kampong Cham. Some of these cash crops exhibit low and variable incomes, especially when grown in the early wet season. Cambodian farmers may borrow money to buy crop inputs and often sell their produce to companies and traders from neighbouring countries, hence they are price takers. Some new crop technologies are evaluated which relate to soil and crop fertility management interacting with climatic factors. Farming Systems in the Northern Cropping Region of NSW: An Economic Analysis AgEcon

This report presents a description of the northern cropping region of NSW and of several identifiable crop-based dryland farming systems therein. Six whole-farm budgets are described based on subregional characteristics and the related farming systems. They include agronomic and agricultural production characteristics as technical parameters in a transparent financial framework, and use a computer spreadsheet format to allow analysis of alternative technologies and management scenarios. Alternative crop rotations in a whole-farm context were compared, relating to six sub-regions in northern NSW.

Trends in Pulse and Oilseed Crops in Winter Cereal Rotations in NSW AgEcon

The key aims in this study are to assess the current level of importance of pulse and oilseed (broadleaf) crops in winter cereal rotations in NSW, and to identify recent trends. The production of broadleaf crops has increased in each region of NSW, but different crops have been favoured. Canola has played a key role in southern regions, and chickpea in the northern regions. In many areas, pulse crops have been grown more because of rotational benefits than their direct gross margins. If recent trends continue, the role of broadleaf crops will increase to 25% of the area sown to field crops in NSW by 2020. However, that will only be achieved with a focussed effort in both research and extension activities.

Upland crop technologies in Cambodia: economic evaluations and some adoption issues AgEcon

Agricultural research and development (R&D) has being conducted in the upland districts of Cambodia to develop new farming systems and crop management technologies. Levels of farm income in these areas are relatively low due to small farm sizes and low crop productivity. Work is also planned to encourage the process of adoption of these technologies, and here we investigate how this process can be facilitated. Whole farm analysis-Fertiliser nitrogen can reduce deep drainage and increase profitability AgEcon

Opportunity cropping has been shown to reduce mean annual deep drainage compared to long fallow systems. A question that remained was the effect of added fertiliser nitrogen under each of the cropping systems and whether it would make a significant difference to amounts of deep drainage and to profitability. Estimates of crop yield and deep drainage results were generated using the APSLM (Agricultural Production Systems Simulator) cropping systems model, to compare long-fallow wheat/sorghum and two opportunity-cropping scenarios on a vertosol on the Liverpool Plains using rainfall data from 1958 to 1997.
